Moving to New York, they signed with Albert Grossman, a former Chicago club owner who was expanding his management operations. Within two years the couple decided to turn professional. Newcomer Tyson often accompanied her on guitar, and by 1959 they were performing as a duo. Moving to Toronto in 1958, Fricker became part of the city's active folk scene. Although she took piano lessons and her parents bought her a guitar, Fricker seldom played an instrument on stage. As a result, Fricker's distinctive vocal style differed from her contemporaries. Ironically, she learned the old ballads through books, not recordings by other singers. Born September 19, 1940, in Chatham, Ontario, she came from a family that encouraged her interest in folk music. While working at local clubs, he met Sylvia Fricker, a striking brunette who sang with the emotion and power of a young Brenda Lee. Making his performing debut singing country songs at a Vancouver café in 1956, he later played with a local rock and roll band before moving to Toronto to work as a commercial artist. His early heroes included bluegrass pioneers Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, which partially explains his distinctive rhythmic drive. A rodeo rider in his late teens and early twenties, he took up the guitar while recuperating from an injury sustained in a fall. The result is a collection of 26 performances, most never previously released. In early 2019, Sylvia came across a collection of 1/4” analog tapes, recorded before live audiences over a period of three or four years in the 70s. They are both in the Canadian music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and are both recipients of the Order of Canada. On the 1968 “Nashville” album, Ian & Sylvia were among the first artists to record Country Rock Music with top Nashville musicians, one month before the Byrds Recorded ‘Sweetheart of the Rodeo”. Sylvia’s song, “You Were On My Mind”, was recorded by The We Five in 1965 and reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. A CBC Radio poll in 2005 named it “the most essential piece of Canadian music”. Ian’s composition, “Four Strong Winds” is now considered a standard. Regarded as pioneers in the folk and Americana genre, Ian & Sylvia first came into prominence in the early 60s folk scenes in Yorkville and Greenwich Village, performing alongside such legends as Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary and Odetta, as well as Canadian icons Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell, and were headliners at the now famous 1963 Newport Festival.
